HIST 358 - History of the Modern Middle East

Credit Hours: 4
This course will introduce students to the history of majority Muslim societies in the Middle East and North Africa. This history is intertwined with the history of Europe and North America, which constitutes an integral part of our survey in this class.  Includes a brief overview of the origins and development of the Islamic civilization, followed by an examination of European colonialism and the emergence of nation states. The later sections are organized thematically and focus on varying themes that might include religion and politics, revolutions, human rights, feminisms, and foreign interventions such as the CIA-backed coup in Iran in 1953, Palestinian struggle for independence, and the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.
