HIST 330 - 20th Century Eastern Europe: The Road to Freedom Credit Hours: 4 The history of Eastern Europe is crucial to understanding Europe in the 20th century. This class will focus on the lands of Poland, Hungary, and the Czechs and Slovaks and their troubled but ultimately triumphant century. We begin with a review of the old regimes in Eastern Europe and the multi-national empires that held sway there (particularly the Romanov and Hapsburg empires). The bulk of the class follows the development of nations and nationalism following World War I, the imposition of fascism and communism, national rebellions and the overthrow of communism, and the establishment of democratic regimes.
