PHIL 323 - Bioethics Credit Hours: 4 This course explores a variety of issues related to biomedical practices and scientific research, focusing on what individual medical practitioners and scientists ought to do and what social justice requires. Particular topics that might be explored are: what makes a human life good and bad; what it means to meaningfully consent to treatment, act autonomously, and promote the autonomy of others; the role of bias in scientific research and how researchers should respond to it; epistemic injustice in medical contexts and how to remedy it; the ethics and justice of abortion; the ethics of doctor assisted suicide; and, the social construction of illness and disability.
