ART 431 - Capstone 2: Professional Practices in Art Credit Hours: 4 Frequency of Offering: Offered annually in the spring semester
Capstone II is the second seminar in a cumulative Capstone Experience for the Art major. The content prioritizes contemporary art research, self-reflection, documentation of one’s creative art practice, and continued opportunities for creative artmaking. The seminar is collaborative and cooperative, with topics, activities, and discussions geared towards life and professional practice beyond graduation. Students learn to identify skills, strengths, knowledge, and experiences gained in their coursework that are relevant to their career goals and professional growth. Capstone II culminates with a public presentation of creative works, an oral presentation illustrating the yearlong project, and the creation of an online presence. Seminar activities include iterations of previous artworks, professional documentation, development of written assets such as an artist statement, annotated bibliography, resumes, and cover letters. Students will gain an understanding of the art market and art world through guided lectures, visiting artist talks, guest faculty, invited speakers, and curated videos and readings. Note: This seminar-based course is designed for the ART major or minor. Students who wish to pursue a creative career but have chosen a major in another creative discipline, are eligible with permission of the instructor.
Prerequisite(s): ART 205 one course in art history chosen from ARTH 225 or ARTH 226 , Two 300-level ART courses, and ART 430 Capstone II: Creative Practices in Art with a C- or higher, or permission of the instructor.
